摘要

Although Confucian culture (CC) due to its conservative nature may hinder risk-taking behavior such as starting a business or innovation, it could help business recovery from crisis such as earthquakes or pandemics. Using unique big data from China, we conduct a series of identification strategies to document that CC causally promotes firm corporate resilience amid crises (measured by stock prices). Causal mediation analysis shows that this is achieved by facilitating the firm’s internal-control practices and intensity, such as compliance with rules and operational continuity; in contrast, moderation effect estimates indicate that external-control proxies such as institutional shareholdings and auditing causally weaken the promotional effect of interest, thus indirectly confirming the effectiveness of internal control.
