主题：The Fate of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom

讲座简介：The war between the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and the Qing Dynasty in the mid-19th century stands as the most devastating conflict in the nation's recorded history, with an estimated death toll of over 70 million. The incumbent Qing Dynasty narrowly managed to defeat the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, regaining political control after a decade and a half of conflict. Using a new dataset, we find that scholars educated in Confucian academies became a key force in the suppression of the Taiping. The civil service examinations system helped maintain political stability and associated rents by endowing elites with a stake in the Qing status quo.

个人简介：Jinlin Wei is an Assistant Professor at the Division of Social Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He holds a PhD in Economics and an MRes in Economics from the Department of Economics, University of Warwick. He seeks to understand economic development in history from a spatial perspective. His research spans China in the late 19^th and early 20^th century, colonial India, and the UK during the Industrial Revolution and the second half of the 19^th century.
