主题：Food Safety Crisis, Coordination and Law Enforcement in China
摘要：The outbreak of successive food safety crises in China has attracted public attention in recent years. While both policy makers and food producers are making tremendous efforts to restore the market order, food safety incidents are repeatedly occurring, which further undermines consumer confidence, reduces the incentive of producers to provide high-quality products, and eventually leads to the collapse of collective reputation in the food sector. In this paper, we investigate a mechanism of coordination to explain the collapse of collective reputation in China’s food sector in an environment of limited law enforcement.
We develop a theoretical model using the global game approaches to study the effects of law enforcement on the likelihood of food safety crisis. In the model each producer independently decides to produce safe or unsafe products based on the public and private information in their possession on the degree of law enforcement. Our results show that the likelihood of food safety crisis depends on the level of public signal and the precisions of both public and private signals. In particular, if the public signal manifests a high level of law enforcement and the private information is more precise than the public one, the more likely that a food safety crisis will occur. Furthermore, releasing strong public signal can be an effective measure to substitute monetary punishment.


演讲者简介：余建宇，法国Toulouse School of Economics经济学博士，现任教于西南财经大学大学经济与管理学院。她的主要研究领域为产业经济学、微观经济学、农业经济学和农业食品供应链。她已在 European Review of Agricultural Economics、 Economics Letters、Revue Economique这3本SSCI国际学术期刊上发表论文，并在《经济研究》、《世界经济文汇》等国内著名期刊上发表多篇学术论文。
