主题:Workers’ Social Networks and Managerial Ideologies: Improving Labor Standards in China

摘要:

This article examines the implementation and enforcement of global labor standards in China. Using a unique survey of firms and their workers in Guangdong Province, this article specifies four findings: 1) managerial ideologies measured by founders‘ college education and managers‘ initiatives in establishing unions are positively related to firms‘ compliance with labor standards; 2) the unique native place networks among Chinese workers are important in preventing labor abuse; 3) despite the ever-increasing regulatory efforts, exploitative labor relations still exist as approximately 20 percent of surveyed workers reported the experience of forced labor and physical abuse, and only 28 percent of surveyed firms paid above minimum wage; and 4) state and private regulatory efforts have achieved limited improvements in labor standards.
